What is Trip Delay cover?

Updated:

Trip Delay can help with reasonable costs while you wait if your eligible flight is delayed for at least 8 hours because of a covered reason.

Trip Delay is part of Travel Delay Cover, provided by Chubb, a global insurance company, and is available with selected ZEN.COM subscription plans for residents of Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, and Lithuania.

What costs can Trip Delay cover?

You may be able to claim eligible costs for:

  • meals and refreshments
  • hotel accommodation
  • transfers needed to return to the airport or station

The costs need to be related to the covered delay.

When does Trip Delay apply?

Your delay may qualify when it lasts at least 8 hours and is caused by a covered reason, such as:

  • a strike or union action that was not already underway or announced when you booked
  • adverse weather conditions
  • a mechanical breakdown
  • an aircraft being grounded because of a mechanical or structural defect

The cover applies when:

  • your journey begins and ends in your country of domicile
  • you check in before the scheduled departure time
  • you follow the conditions of your travel agent, tour operator, and transport provider
  • you allow enough time to reach the point where your journey starts
  • the costs cannot be recovered from an airline, hotel, tour operator, or another provider
  • any additional travel or accommodation is of a similar standard to what you originally planned

You’ll also need written confirmation from the public transport company showing how long the delay lasted and why it happened.

When does Trip Delay not apply?

Trip Delay does not cover every delay. Examples include:

  • a strike that had already started or been announced before you booked
  • transport withdrawn from service by a civil aviation, port, or similar authority
  • a delay caused because you did not allow enough time for your journey
  • a journey that does not begin and end in your country of domicile
  • costs that can be recovered from an airline, hotel, tour operator, or another provider
  • travel or accommodation upgrades above the standard originally planned for your trip
  • travel against the advice or restrictions of the relevant national or local authorities

Full conditions, limits, and exclusions are available in the Travel and Lifestyle Benefits Terms.

What should I keep if I want to make a claim?

Keep:

  • your travel booking and itinerary
  • written confirmation showing how long the delay lasted and why it happened
  • receipts for eligible meals, refreshments, accommodation, and transfers
  • documents showing whether another provider has reimbursed any of the costs
